Getting out of a bad relationship is the real Christmas miracle

When Pete handed me the gift, I was hesitant. It felt like a tiny stack of note cards. The wrapping paper had nothing to grip and whatever was contained within slid around alarmingly. In an instant, I knew what he had given me.

At that same moment, I decided to breakup with him.

I’m a sucker for the holidays. The lights, the music, the trees, the incessant smell of cinnamon in the air, I love it all. Mostly, I enjoy exchanging gifts. …

They don’t have to be abusive to be bad for you

I felt Tim fall into the bed next to me. I pretended to be asleep. I heard him give a big sigh. Then another. He poked me on the shoulder.

“You awake?”

“I am now.”

“Oh sorry. I’ll let you sleep.”

He said it like it was a kind favor, but his inflection indicated disappointment and sadness. I could go to sleep…but that sigh told me he’d stay awake, staring at the ceiling or scrolling through his phone mindlessly until he drifted off. I sat up. “It’s OK. Everything alright?”

“Ugh. It’s never alright.”

Here we go.

As a culture…

When your incomes are different hard decisions must be made

“I bought a house.”

I shut my computer so I could give my partner my full attention.

“Oh?” Admittedly this was not an eloquent response. Yet when you find out your significant other has made a huge purchase, such as a house, there are too many questions to pick from. I hoped the inflection in my voice encompassed the confusion, awe, and terror I felt at his announcement.

He sat on the couch next to me. “So yeah, I bought a house. I have been talking to my parents about it and then a good one came on the market…

After losing my job in June, I felt like I was spiraling out of control. I had a bit of money saved. But how was I going to find a new job that could pay our insane rent? The fear nearly drowned me until my partner reminded me to breathe. He told me, “Focus on the art stuff, I’ll cover us until we move.”

I didn’t argue. I immediately dived into the world of passive income to find which paths were right for me.

I should know since I do it nearly every year

Last year on December 31st my partner asked if I wanted to go out with him and a bunch of friends. I told him I was good. He knew I wasn’t feeling up to it, so he gave me an early New Year’s kiss and headed out. I spent New Year’s Eve alone.

I know, it sounds sad. The world likes to assume that a woman home alone on a Saturday, on a holiday no less, drinking wine and eating her way through a pizza, is somehow the saddest human ever. But there’s nothing sad about it. That’s my dream…

The story of John List, family annihilator

On December 7th, 1971, police and neighbors broke into the List’s large home after being alerted to the children’s long absence from school and reports of every light in the house going off one by one for a month. The moment they forced a window open the smell of putrid decay overtook them. Wandering through the house, handkerchiefs covering their noses, the police found four bodies in the ballroom. Another body remained upstairs. John was nowhere to be found.

Instead of finding his body, they found his face cut out from every family photo and a 5-page letter. In it…

He told me I was being a prude

Too many partners in the bedroom wasn’t for me, in my limited experience. To be fair, I’d seen my own parent’s marriage combust under the weight of their attempts to maintain an open marriage. So I had reason to be concerned. Yet there was also my own personality to consider. I prefer monogamy, 1 partner. Simple, or as simple as love can ever be for me. I know others who’ve managed polyamory well. However, I had no desire to attempt that type of relationship.

This was what I explained to a boyfriend after he brought up the subject. He was…

Mask-to-quilt online courses

There will a surplus of masks soon. Will you be in a position to meet the demand for the environmentally conscious desire to not condemn them to the landfill? Make the dumpster fire that was 2020 for many into a lasting memory they can pass on to future generations in the form of a…

Being a Grinch isn’t as bad as being naive about your privilege

Image for post

The holidays are upon us and that means it’s time to be good to your fellow humans. Unfortunately, some have classist attitudes and mindsets that make that impossible. It’s one thing to feel the spirit of Christmas in your heart. It’s another to believe everyone else is able enjoy it in the same manner as you . So just in case, here are some ways to check your class privilege this Christmas.

Don’t assume everyone will be giving gifts

Christmas is my favorite season of the year. No small part of that is because I love to shower my friends with gifts. Usually, they are small, but…

Stop treating hourly workers like cautionary tales

There should be an agreement among working-class retail store managers. When anyone over 30 is interviewing for a minimum wage seasonal position, no one should ask them why want to work there. We don’t. Most of us are only there because something went terribly wrong.

This was the sentiment that came to mind as I trudged through a semi-busy mall. Many stores had a “HIRING SEASONAL WORKERS” sign in their window. I went into each one to ask for an application, or to be told I needed to apply online. …
