— Augmented Reality in Fashion

After Covid, the physical shopping experience took a toll under the shadows of online shopping. When consumers shifted to virtual and digital, a lot of the retail outlets suffered from losses or closures. In this situation to bump up engagement, AR and try-ons within online shopping increase traction, allowing users to virtually “try on” clothes and accessories using their phones as the mirror. A level up from phone screen AR would be to incorporate AR within the mirrors at retail stores. Immersive technology like Smart Mirrors increase visual merchandising and visit frequencies. They’re a great way to bring in the crowd and add an element to retail outlets that counters the increase in online shopping.

As customers virtually try on products, they create and share content, make an effort to learn more about the products and generate word of mouth. Smart mirrors also bring a lot of whimsy and fun to a traditional shopping experience. According to Snapchat community research, brands that create such experiences are 82% more likely to be recommended to others. Snap also introduced their AR mirror in collaboration with Nike, to be adapted in their retail outlets.

How can it drive measurable engagement and generate revenue?

Engagement: Smart mirrors can transform fitting rooms into interactive playgrounds. Users can virtually mix and match outfits, see different color options, and even get styling recommendations. This playful experience encourages longer in-store stays, product exploration and frequent returns.

Revenue: Smart mirrors can analyze user preferences and recommend complementary items in real-time — increasing basket sizes. Additionally, data collected on virtual try-on behavior can inform store layout and product placement.
