presentation day is always a bundle of fun. (note sarcasm)

Authentic image of my team vs. my classmates on presentation day..

Presentation day was fun. We learnt a lot of new stuff. A bunch of it was quite fun, although my classmates would disagree. I could tell since they looked like this:

SO.

Design history. A fun topic, all things considered, although I would say the amount of time given to it doesn’t feel justified. (make of that what you will)

We learnt a bunch about all the different eras of history from the aspect of design, and recently it all culminated in a group project where we had to make a presentation regarding specific scholarly papers regarding design history that were given to us. we, in particular, were given “The Designer and the Socio-Technology of Small Production” by HK Vyas.

The paper was about the history of craftsmanship in India, it’s adaptation to modern times, and the role industrial designers had to play in it all. Quite an interesting read, in all honesty. I enjoyed reading it.

Turns out that craftsmanship in India got hit by modernization harder than a freight train. To say the least, it did not come out unscathed.

But, at least, the Indian industrial designers — the ones who haven’t sold their souls to the corporate yet, at least — are doing great work. I read about some truly remarkable inventions of theirs in the case studies.

My group was one of the bigger ones, composed of five people, and unfortunately, we weren’t exactly the most academically gifted of the bunch. We decided to do away with elegant, fancy formats and animations altogether, and decided that we would let our “hard work and dedication” speak for itself.

The result of that determination(and a fair few sleepless nights) was a 40-slide monstrosity, with diagrams, and notes, and flow charts, and graphical illustrations on pretty much almost every slide.

And while the professor commended our efforts, not all of us in the group were bona fide silver-tongues that had maxed out their charisma. Our work did speak for itself, but we ourselves weren’t able to.

That did end up costing us some marks in the end.

The other presentations weren’t nearly as illustrated or as straightforward as ours, but made up for it by being more fancy and more cool-looking.

… I will not deny having taken notes during their presentation to steal tips and points for our own.

Our presentation might not have been a smashing success, but it held water, and maybe, the real presentation was the lessons we learnt along the way…

Okay okay, I apologize for that reference, I couldn’t help it. GK has infected me with the need, the need for ̶s̶p̶e̶e̶d̶ poor jokes.

Run, before it claims us all.
