About Me — Meghan McKie
existential trans absurdity • naval officer • apparently now a writer • she/her
Hi everyone! I’m Meghan, age 49, and I’m an active duty naval officer with the Royal Canadian Navy. I’ve just been assigned to our National Defence HQ in Ottawa, and I think I’ll be rounding out my career there. I’m married to another naval officer, and together we have three great kids, the oldest of whom is seven.
I’ve always wanted to be a published writer, and this seems like an easy way to dip my toes into this world. Ideally, I’d be writing fiction, but apparently we’re supposed to start writing about what we know. I know myself, almost certainly better than anyone — although I’m very much a work in progress. I’ll talk more about myself as we progress. Anyway, without further adieu, let’s get started. Everyone, meet me.
I am transgender, and I started and completed my gender transition in uniform with the Navy.
I first knew this about myself from about the age of four, around the time children become self-aware, that they are their own individual person. Naturally, I didn’t have the vocabulary or the frame of reference to verbalize it or explain it, but I certainly knew that this was something that was amiss with me.
