The realities of adoption shared through first-person narrative. A place for radical honesty and healing.
Note from the editor
Welcome to adoptēre, which is Latin for ‘adopt’. I find it fitting because the concept of adoption is as old as human society (the term exists in Latin… that’s pretty old), and yet we’re still not getting it right. First and foremost, this is intended to be a safe space. In 2023, we are hearing unprecedented amounts of adult adoptees, including me, sharing the vast impact adoption had on their lives. Adoption itself is complicated and very frequently problematic. Historically, information about adoption has been shared by adoption agencies, social workers, churches and community organizations, and adoptive parents, but rarely have the voices of adoptees been acknowledged, much less elevated and valued. Here, we hear you, we believe you, and we get you. The input of all other “satellite parties” is welcome, but we will be highlighting and elevating the words of adoptees as our primary mission, and no material will be published with us unless the child/adoptee is centered in the narrative. We believe the future of adoption can only be child-centered and our material will reflect this progressive, forward-thinking ideology.
