Ideology: If a Tory is for it, we’re probably against it.
Agenda: To still have 1 MLA left after the PCs have gone extinct.
Party Motto: Disgruntled Tories Unite! You have nothing to lose but your pointless existence!
Recruitment Pitch (Unofficial): Dissatisfied being passed over for a promotion to cabinet? Unhappy spending life as a backbencher for the PCs? Congratulations, you’re qualified to be our next party leader!
Headquarters: No one will rent them a room anywhere in the province.
You have to admire people who bravely and proudly soldier on under a party brand name that is basically on par with a swear word amongst the population you’re trying to convince to elect you. Given the fact that it hasn’t been working for more than 20 years though and you also have to question the sanity of those who soldier on, doing the same futile thing over and over again. Of course it is the only thing a former PC backbencher is qualified to do.
In the meantime the party’s elected caucus has basically dwindled to a few disgruntled former Tories who want to glare at the government for a decade, sulking that they weren’t recognized for how amazing they are by the Divine holders of the Forever Government. Anyone with talent is pretty much decamping to the Federal scene or running as the official candidate of several different parties in her riding.
Bottom Line: voting for them is about as effective as eating your ballot. All it will do is cause a stomach ache Unless you can get three party’s represented with one candidate (see Laurie Blakeman) there isn’t any point voting for any Liberal in Alberta.
