This is a follow-on to Climate bombs and last of a series. The saddest thing about tackling the climate emergency is that we’re simply incapable of either learning lessons of the past as in that post, or taking heed of the current humanitarian emergency with heat domes three summers running, the shrinking of Ant/Arctic sea ice and the heating of oceans.

News flash: UK PM okays 100 new licenses in the North Sea (Guardian, below).

But it doesn’t take a Freud or a Jung to tell he doesn’t believe a word he says…

For non-British: his current government is on the ropes & he’s grasping at straws.

For background, here is a brief history of North Sea oil&gas.

But it’s entirely another when the powers that be, not only pledged to cut emissions in previous COPs, but then back-pedal by offering huge licensing rounds in the US Gulf of Mexico (Guardian), and just recently re-opened North Sea drilling (above) in a moribund oil province.

… Decommissioning (Wikipedia) is the name of the game in the UK North Sea, haven’t they heard?

Check out UK guv own guidelines here from 10½ years ago(!) and here from 2 years ago… Oh! and do I remember correctly “Decommissioning — the D word” industry meetings 2016 and 2017 in London — disclosure, I gave a talk at the latter, my last oil&gas involvement — and if this is all Greek to you, no worries! Here’s a handy toolkit just for you… And in case you think this is passé, then the IOPC Meeting this coming fall, advertised in that state-of-the-art paper, will keep you fully up-to-date!

Where is gets egregious, is the COP28 in Abu Dhabi is headed by the head of the local National Oil Company… talk about letting the fox manage the chicken coop! But this is no surprise, as a friend who attended COP27 in Sharm el Sheikh told me it was just like an oil&gas show we used to attend decades ago — previous in this series here — and it’s no secret that COP26 in Glasgow I attended online was the beginning of green-washing by the oilers arriving in jets, who literally elbowed out greens who marched up there on foot and bikes — disclosure: Quaker Friends from my Meeting House participated in Journey to COP26.

So there are climate bombs in my previous post… Let’s not be NIMBY’s! Let’s build our very own, shall we? This concludes my series on climate issues here, here, here & here.

Now if Sunak and Trudeau — both entitled thru money and family — just had a phone conversation how the Government of Canada delivers on key climate commitment to phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies… Sets my maple leaf little heart aflutter (I’m naturalized Canadian and French residing in UK)!

Let’s close with satirical humor from Juice Media, shall we (I grew up in Oz)?

Update: “catch-up guv, part 2": it’s just learning that carbon capture won’t help the climate emergency (Guardian, note also the PM known for charismatic photo ops cannot now look sincere if he tried to).

Together with the disclosure that carbon offsetting are basically lies (Guardian), the reality is that the truth will eventually outflank the liars… question is, will it be soon enough?
