Another set of ramblings I forgot to post at the time. My top two commentaries on the Psalms, since my Airdrie Psalm Exposition days, have been Kidner and Bonar. Here’s some other stuff I used:
Just about to finish preaching on Esther. I agree with Jonny that there’s no stand out commentary. What I actually found most helpful was:
***Christopher Ash*** — 3 talks for minister’s wives (Proc Trust audio & video). Probably the best thing on it…
I got to the end of a series on Gen 4–11 six weeks ago and realised I hadn’t converted the ramblings below into anything postable. At this point I don’t have the time or motivation to tidy it up, but here are my notes in case they’re helpful! (see also on Gen 1–3):
Having just preached Romans 1–7, I found that Paul Levy’s advice proved true:
“between Christopher Ash's 2 volume 'Teaching Romans' and James Philip's 'The Power of God' not much else is needed.”Ash, particularly, is excellent. Frustratingly, its base…

Compared to most OT books, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to Daniel. (Update: I seem to have missed DRD off my list, but definitely used him!)
Steinmann — eventually had to buy it in light of all the good quotations, by the time I got to ch 5…
I’ve just finished preaching through Galatians in 18 sermons.
It was an evening series and I was doing it in fairly big chunks so I had to be quite selective in what I used.
[Argh — just realised I had Witsius in Logos but didn’t realise he had a book on the Lord’s Prayer! 7/3/2018]
Update: Since I preached the series, Kevin DeYoung has written a book on the Ten Commandments which I’ve reviewed elsewhere. In short, he’s good on nine of them!
Update: I’m about to start preaching 16 to the end and looking forward to using a new commentary by Steinmann, whose commentary on Daniel I loved. Also, the Seceder George Lawson has a book Discourses on the History of David, though it’s not really a commentary. This time…
