After getting married earlier this year, my husband and I decided to take $1,000 of our wedding money and invest it to (hopefully) make it grow. Our options seemed endless, but assessing the risk of each potential investment, and debating how much risk we wanted to take on, made us weary of what to do with that cash.

For new investors like us, learning about the different types of investments available to you is key to making the best possible decision for your portfolio and personal financial plans. That’s why I decided to turn to the experts and ask them about the riskiest ways a person could invest $1,000 and what they’d recommend instead.

When you’re looking to invest, you might find yourself with a few different choices. You can invest in stocks, which represent shares of ownership in individual companies, or options, which are contracts that let you bet on the direction of the stock price.
