Watching her family nearly lose their home inspired a 27-year-old to save $150,000 in 5 years: ‘That was a defining moment for me’

Parween Mander was just a kid when she had to translate to her parents that they were in danger of losing their home. Saving six figures is security.

Parween Mander grew up the eldest daughter of immigrant parents, an experience that shaped her relationship with money. “From an early age, my perception of money was if you didn’t have it, that meant you lacked power, control, and security,” she tells Insider. “A lot of children of immigrants see money as a scarce resource, and money was made and spent in survival.”

Thinking back to her younger self, Mander, now a millennial money coach, remembers one very specific moment from her childhood where her family almost lost their home. When a banker came by to tell the family they could lose their house, it was Mander who had to translate this devastating news to her parents. Luckily, her family found a way to keep their home — but this experience has never escaped her memory.

“That was a defining moment for me,” she says.
