In this chapter, Kibuka begins his journey to the city of the gods, and battles with his personal conviction on the task he was set…

Tano spun his lie, and noble Kibuka listened, setting out at dusk toward the heavens with nothing but his wooden shield and javelin. It was strictly forbidden for men to enter the cities of gods — let alone steal their artifacts — but Tano’s silver tongue convinced Kibuka righteous in his mission. If he succeeded, he held hope for forgiveness. If the tribunal were to rule him to the underworld, he considered his soul a small price for restoring balance to the universe.

Kibuka journeyed day and night through deserts and rivers before finally approaching the base of Kilimanjaro. His destination, the capital perched high on the summits was enshrouded in a storm. But up he climbed, at first scrambling against the loose shale, then with hands and feet like feelers raking through the thick snow for solid rock. Against the thin and freezing air, he fought his way to the peak to stand before heaven’s gates.

Summiting Kilimanjaro was a battle for man, but his next challenge pitted him against the gods: passing into the city. Mortals were strictly forbidden from entering, and a man knocking at the gates would hardly cause the stir Tano was looking for. So instead, Tano had equipped Kibuka with a special artifact — an Ibibio mask that when worn would cause him to resemble a spirit.

Nearing the gates, Kibuka donned the mask and proceeded forward. With nerves of steel he approached, looked down the guards and passed the threshold, the mighty immortals around him none the wiser.

Once inside, Kibuka faced his second challenge: entering the temple that held the unholy scepter. After identifying the heavily guarded structure where Tano claimed the artifact to be, Kibuka made his move. While he hadn’t yet witnessed signs of the civil unrest that Tano had described, Kibuka still had no reason to doubt the god’s story.

Around the corner from the entrance, Kibuka pulled the second gift he had received from Tano from his pack — a magic Calabash shaker. Following the instructions he had received from Tano to the letter, he plugged his ears with cloth and began shaking his enchanted instrument. Silence surrounded him, and as he checked around the corner to see if his ritual had attracted attention, he saw that everyone in earshot — including the temple guards — had fallen asleep.

Now only one challenge remained: removing the scepter and restoring order to the civilization of the gods. But doubt began to nag at Kibuka. Where was the strife that Tano had described? This was a city on the brink of a war that threatened to destroy the world — why couldn’t Kibuka feel any threat?

He hesitantly approached the podium atop which sat a brilliant golden scepter.

“The cursed object must also be tricking me,” thought Kibuka “I mustn’t let doubt guide me from the path of my mission.”
