In this thrilling conclusion, Kibuka completes his misguided quest and confronts his deceptor. Will Tano succeed in his mission to throw heaven and earth into disarray? Or will Kibuka spare mankind from the wrath of the gods?

With fresh resolve, Kibuka reached up and grabbed the scepter. He immediately felt a surge of power through his body like lightning; for the gods, handling such an object would have been nothing, yet for a mortal, the experience was overwhelming. Unable to withstand the power any longer, Kibuka dropped the staff to the ground. Looking up, he found himself no longer alone — standing before him was Mawu-Lisa, and behind them, Tano in his true form.

“Exactly as I claimed,” began Tano “the mortals have conspired to steal power from the gods! Caught red-handed — you must be as brave as you are foolish, human!”

Indeed, it’s unwise to anger the gods, but to insult them like this risked fracturing the very balance of the universe. Kibuka had broken the most sacred tenants governing gods and men, and the rage swelling within Mawu-Lisa permeated the air. It wouldn’t just be Kibuka punished for this transgression — all mankind would suffer.

Thinking fast, Kibuka began his defense. “Yes, it’s true: there is a conspiracy at play,” said Kibuka “but it’s not the conspiracy you believe! I was tricked by another god, my very accuser, into carrying out this transgression, so that he might take advantage of the situation for his own gain.”

“He is even so foolish as to believe you’d trust the words of a mortal over those of your own kin” scoffed Tano.

“Just wait,” appealed Kibuka “I can prove that this scheme was not my own.”

Kibuka produced the magical Calabash shaker and removed his enchanted mask. The spirit’s visage he wore dissipated like smoke from him to reveal his mortal face beneath.

“No human possesses the power to craft such artifacts — only gods can trick gods. Yes, humans are resourceful, but enough to steal two magical artifacts and conspire to steal a third, in doing so risking shattering the perfect harmony that has served us so well for as long as anyone can remember? For what?”

Mawu-Lisa stared at Kibuka, mulling his words.

“Yes, it’s true — mortals are crafty, but a plan like this could only have come from one who believed themselves equal to me. Yet with the evidence presented, and without extra witnesses, it’s impossible, even for me, to determine the truth. Both of you must face retribution, yet your souls should both be spared from Asamando.”

Taking now the golden staff in their hand, Mawu-Lisa drove it thrice toward the temple floor. With a cry, Tano was hurled down toward the earth, to become the river where he first spoke with Kibuka, and to remain so forever.

Mawu-Lisa then turned to Kibuka. “You have committed an inexcusable act, and while I am inclined to believe you were tricked, it is a crime that cannot go unpunished.”

Mawu-Lisa gripped the scepter once more causing a strange sensation to course through Kibuka. Looking down, he watched as his flesh and bones faded into nothing.

“You may remain on Earth, but as a warning to other mortals who might think to enter the realm of the gods you and your kin shall become ghosts.”

In a flash, Kibuka was thrown out of the temple toward the dust at the base of the mountain. Weary of the risk posed by humans misguided into attempting to enter, Mawu-Lisa lifted the city from Earth into the heavens, splitting the worlds of god and man.

As he watched the great city ascend into the sky, Kibuka felt a wave of great shame, then of great resolve. He and his kin had been cursed, yet they had also been given a great blessing. They would remain on Earth, gods among men — walking testaments to how high man can climb, and how far he can fall.

The gods now out of sight, Kibuka looked around. The mask and shaker that had aided him in his ill-fated quest remained, now sat dull and disenchanted beside him. He rose, hid his face behind the mask, threw the shaker over his shoulder and set off to gather his kin to bring them to bathe and play in the river by his village that Tano had become.
