Something tells you that the voices are friendly. Moving on in that direction, you cross the rocks, listening.

Then you hear marching boots. You shrink back into the undergrowth, sheltering behind a tree. Your eyes widen; a company of goblins are marching to war. They’re surprisingly disciplined. Towards the back are wolf-riders, grim-faced and armored. They’re moving not towards town but deeper into the forest.

You are silent as they pass, then hurry in the opposite direction, re-finding the forest river. Ahead, you spy adventurers from town — a human mage, a lizardman warrior, and a well-dressed goblin diplomat.
