No Guards in the Guard Room

This is a ‘choose your own’ fiction story, “drabble edition”. You can find chapter 1 of this story here: The Burned Village. Or check out the previous chapter: ‘The Ladder Into Ballax’ by JF Danskin.

You pull up the ladder, bolt the trapdoor, then look around. The 15-foot-square room is bare but for a sleeping mat and a barrel of water. There’s just other exit — a wooden door.

Scruff whines. You’re both tired, dirty —and you don’t think the dog will be safe to explore the rest of Ballax.

You use the barrel to wash, then you turn to Scruff. “Stay here, boy,” you say. “The orc guard is dead, and the beast can’t get up here.”

He whimpers.

“I’ll return — I promise.”

He sniffs the sleeping mat, then settles, an eyebrow raised.
