The Ladder Into Ballax
A chapter of a ‘choose your own’ tale

There is no time to lose. You step towards the ladder up… but then look at Scruff — the dog who just saved you.
He whimpers.
“You can’t stay here, boy,” you murmur. You hurry up the ladder to investigate, and find a dry, empty guard room. No doubt the base of the dead orc at the foot of the ladder… There is also rope.
Coming back down, you create a makeshift harness around Scruff’s legs and chest, then loop it over the top of the ladder. Soon, you have raised him enough for him to scrabble into the guard room.
