One of Code for Canada’s principles is to operate in public. These regular blog posts put that value into practice, giving readers a window into what we’re doing — and how we do it.

Welcome to our #weeknotes! Here’s Code for Canada’s Rose, Bud and Thorn for the week of July 22–26, 2019.

🌹 Rose: We were in Ottawa this week for the first of our two 2019 Showcases! Over 150 people joined us to celebrate the civic tech movement in Canada. We heard from some inspiring speakers, highlighted the work of our 2018 fellows, and announced the start of recruitment for the 2020 Code for Canada fellowship. It was a great night with lots of energy, learning and conversation. Meha even described it as her favourite day of working at Code for Canada!

🌱 Bud: We held the first monthly meeting of a Code for Canada discussion group to read and reflect on the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The goal of the discussion group is to gain a greater understanding of the contents of the report, our personal and professional relationships to it, and to each other via it. While this requires discussing some heavy topics, as an organization working with governments and communities across Canada, we believe it is important to reflect on how our work connects to the findings of the report.

📌 Thorn: Our Showcases in Ottawa and Edmonton required booking travel and accommodation for several staff, fellows and speakers. With so many people, cities and payment options involved, all the logistics quickly became very complex — especially with two events just a few days apart. Once we’ve had some downtime, we’ll be looking at how we can coordinate and communicate differently the next time to create less work for everyone.

As always, thank you for reading our weeknotes! If you’d like to know more about Code for Canada, check out our website, follow us on Twitter, or subscribe to our newsletter.
