It is the beginning of the new month, and October has shaped up to be quite a time for Code.gov. This summer we were looking ahead, targeting one single event for us to make an impact. However, opportunity has a funny way of sneaking up on you. That is what happened with our October, and you can take advantage of it. We are going to be out in the world, bringing Code.gov to you; and we’re hoping that you will make some time out of your month celebrating seasonal change, pumpkin spice coffee creamers, and Trick-or-Treaters to come out, say “Hi,” and ask us questions about what we’re doing at Code.gov.

October 13
Hack Day at GW University
George Washington University Campus, Washington D.C.

Collaborating with the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) at George Washington University, Code.gov is hosting a Hack Day, all day, on October 13. With a handful of projects from our website, the Code.gov team will be working with students of all backgrounds and skill levels to answer challenges issued at the beginning of the day. Our goal by the end of our Hack Day is that participants have code, either a partial or a complete project. Test your imagination and come out for a day of code and community!

This Hack Day event is open only to GW students.

October 17, 6–9 p.m.
Operation Code: DC Meetup
Washington D.C.

Operation Code: DC assists transitioning military, military spouses, and veterans with all things tech, ranging from software development training to finding leads in the always-growing tech industry. October’s Meetup at the GE Aviation Digital’s Tech Accelerator is open to the general public, and Operation Code: DC is excited to meet you.

Featured at this meetup is Code.gov’s own FSCP and Open Source Expert, Joe Castle. He will be presenting his own path from training with howitzers to leading government technology strategy. His discussion will include a look at Code.gov and the federal mandate to open source taxpayer-funded software through the Federal Source Code Policy. The evening will also feature speakers Marsel Grey and Stuart Hanberg, both with their own talks and their own takes on technology.

October 21–23
All Things Open
Raleigh, N.C.

Billed as the largest “open” tech conference on the East Coast, All Things Open features topics and technologies geared towards attendees becoming better at open source projects, assisting in coming up with achievable goals with development goals, and helping individuals become better members of the open source community. The ATO attendees cover different backgrounds and perspectives, and after six years is considered one of the best conferences of its kind. Joe Castle will be there, along with other members of the Code.gov team, and if you have questions for us, we would love to talk with you more about what we do.

October 23, 6–9 p.m.
Tech & Pints at Growler USA
Raleigh, N.C.

Raleigh Tech & Pints is partnering with the Code.gov team for a Meetup following All Things Open. Taking place in the upstairs event space at Growler USA, An Evening with Code.gov will kick off with casual networking between attendees, representatives of Tech & Pints, and team members from Code.gov. In attendance will be…

Joe Castle, FSCP and Open Source Expert

Ricardo Reyes, Director of Open Source and Community Outreach

Daniel J. Dufour, Front End Developer for Code.gov

Tee Morris, Chief of Communications for Code.gov

This event, free and open to the public, promises to be an evening to connect with other IT professionals, learn about open source communities & federal policy, and enjoy a selection of over 100 beers! If you are attending All Things Open, this is a great opportunity to connect with some of the other attendees and local tech influencers. Or if you are local to the area but were unable to attend All Things Open, you can still meet Code.gov at Growler USA.

October 25
Elastic on Tour
Washington D.C.

From product roadmap insights to technical deep dives to hands-on demos, this is Elastic on Tour, a one-day event offering the best practices and know-how you need to drive success with Elasticsearch and the open source Elastic Stack in the public sector. Code.gov will be there, introducing you to what we do and sharing recent improvements and developments on our website. Come on out and talk to us. We would love to meet you!

This is our month in a nutshell, and while you might miss us at one event, you can always catch us at another event. We love meeting innovative, imaginative minds and want to hear about what you are doing with America’s Code, or introducing you to the opportunities we offer at Code.gov. If you have an event you would like to see us appear at or would like to talk to us about appearing at a meetup, visit us on Twitter or LinkedIn, and share with us what’s on your mind. We hope to see you online, or at one of these events, to answer whatever questions you may have for us, and to offer you a chance to make a difference, to innovate, and to create.

See you soon. Code on.
