Tableau Visualizations and Cheering on the Yankees (Day in the Life of a Data Analyst Intern)
Each summer, Earnest Research opens its doors to a lucky group of interns who join the team for our Data Analyst Summer Internship program. Working side by side with Senior Data Analyst mentors, interns learn core skills like interpreting financial statements, excel best practices and SQL programming during an intensive and fast paced 8-week program.
Dan Tuchman, a student at Yeshiva University pursuing a degree in finance and information systems, was one of our star interns this summer. We’re excited to say that Dan will be joining the Earnest team full time after he graduates!
Read on to see how Dan spent a typical day as a Data Analyst Intern this summer. For more information on our summer internships, email careers@earnestresearch.com.
9:00 am: Arrive at the office, fill up a glass of cold brew from the tap, and strike up a conversation with some of the full-time employees. Everyone is so friendly! Eventually make it back to my desk and chat with some of my fellow interns about yesterday’s World Cup match.
10:00 am: Create a to-do list on interesting questions and areas of exploration for the day. My morning will be focused on querying the data using SQL, while the afternoon will be designated to creating data visualizations.
11:00 am: Head to one of the conference rooms with my mentor for the summer — a Senior Data Analyst — for a quick rundown of a retail company we are reviewing on a call with a financial services client. Afterwards, my mentor clarifies why the client might be interested in the questions raised and how Earnest data is useful in testing out the client’s thesis. These calls allow me to better understand how an analyst should investigate data.
12:00 pm: Using some of the insights I gained from the client call, it’s back to exploring the data using SQL.
1:00 pm: The interns grab some food at one of the numerous restaurants in the area and head to Madison Square Park. This is a great opportunity to hear about some of the challenges other interns are facing with their projects, while also hearing about fun things to do in New York City over the summer.
2:00 pm: Begin exploring the data through our online platform. I can’t believe that just a few weeks ago, I had no experience creating visualizations. My goal is to come up with unique insights on consumer trends in the data. This can range anywhere from competitive analysis to customer lifetime value.
4:00 pm: Jump on a call with Earnest’s Business Development team. It’s both useful and interesting to see these calls in action, and I get a better sense for how clients use Earnest data products.
5:00 pm: Check in with my mentor. Frequent check-ins help guide how I should be thinking about the company I’m researching and provide me with a new list of interesting areas to explore tomorrow.
6:30 pm: Take in the Yankees game with Earnest’s leadership team and other interns. I enjoy the weather, rooting for my home team (the Orioles), and sitting next to Kevin Carson, the CEO. Throughout the game, I ask questions about the company and his vision for its future. It’s a great opportunity to hear where Kevin sees the company growing.
