‘Which way? — Belgrade’ (via)

Belgrade

Living only a 2-hour drive away from Belgrade has given me the opportunity to visit numerous times on different occasions, and I’ll probably visit many more times to explore new parts, find new places, and meet new people.

For now I’ll just mention the most famous places since exploring the whole city can take a while.

The capital of Serbia is vibrant and vivid, praised through the region for its nightlife. When the weekend comes, thousands of party-loving people from the surrounding areas head to Belgrade’s world-famous floating river clubs called splavovi. The old ones, with more traditional music, are situated on the Sava River. The Danube River, on the other hand, is packed with modern-looking clubs. As they are all connected to the river bank, it’s easy to go clubbing as everything is quite near at hand.

Throughout the day, it feels like partying on the river rafts shifts to a more laid-back daytime version on Knez Mihailova, the main pedestrian street. Cafés are packed with people indulging in conversations over a cup of their favourite drink — coffee. I prefer admiring the knitting capabilities of ladies sitting on the roadside. A handmade scarf is always a good investment.

Since the crowds can sometimes be overwhelming, the nearby Kalemegdan Park is a place to take a stroll and relax. Belgrade Fortress overlooks the confluence of the Sava and the Danube it’s a view not to be missed.

I have saved the best for the end — food! The Bohemian quarter (known as Skadarlija) is the place where all the best restaurants with traditional cuisine are located. Just walking down the narrow cobblestone streets takes you back in time following the path of many prominent residents and visitors. It is said that Alfred Hitchcock ended a diet during a visit to one of Skadarlija’s famous restaurants. Can’t blame him — it takes an awful lot of self-control not to eat everything from the menu, trust me.
