This month we’ve been getting behind the amazing work done by Movember, the leading charity changing the face of men’s health. This incredible charity organization tackles three of the biggest issues facing men today: mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research, and transforming the way health services reach and support men.

To show our support for such an important cause, Emanate took a deep dive into men’s mental health to find out more about the challenges, and some potential solutions available to men that are struggling. We spoke with creatives and counsellors to find out more about the topic of mental health.

Michael McGlynn, producer & performer:

Michael McGlynn, an ARIA nominated producer from Australia spoke to us about his personal experience with anxiety, after he suffered from a series of panic attacks. After a seemingly insignificant jog, Michael suffered from an acute panic attack; he struggled to breath and was struck by an overwhelming sense of fear and anxiety. The onset of this panic attack was so swift that it affected his whole world. As the panic attacks became more frequent, his mental health, his live performances; everything was turned upside down. The result of this traumatic experience led Michael to something that some men may still consider to be taboo:

Therapy.

“What happened next was a miracle. An epiphany. An awakening. There are many words for it. But that psychologist changed everything in the next hour and a half.”

— Michael McGlynn.

The breakthroughs made during these sessions gave Michael a second chance; giving him the tools necessary to overcome his anxiety and completely rid him of panic attacks. So invigorated by the experience, Michael wrote: “Anxiety — Why It’s My Friend. Not My Enemy”. The article resonated with creatives around the world and encouraged readers not to run from their anxiety, but to use it as a kind of thermometer. For Michael and many other men facing the same issues, therapy gave him his life back.

Dr Elon Gersh, Clinical Psychologist:

We also spoke with Dr Elon Gersh, a clinical psychologist working with individuals of different backgrounds to help them find the same kind of positive relief that Michael was looking for. Dr Gersh broke down the specific struggles facing creatives today, from artistic pressures to the familiar financial struggles that almost all creatives go through at one point during their career.

“If I were to choose a word that seems to link creativity and struggles with mental health it would be sensitivity. I think there is a sensitivity that makes an artist great, in terms of a capacity to feel and to perceive the world in a unique way. This same sensitivity can also manifest as a sensitivity to emotions, relationships and the world more broadly that can predispose people to mental health challenges.”

— Dr Elon Gersh
