A few weeks ago we asked what it would take for the U.S.A. to win the World Cup in your lifetime. Among the many replies, one theme drew our attention: The role of Major League Soccer in building the culture required to train and incentivize world class players.

A number of people—see @MoralesMel7 and @flavianflavi — wrote in arguing the U.S. will only get better as a soccer country if MLS drastically improves, for example, by organizing more like European leagues, and becoming good enough to draw big audiences that can support the kinds of big salaries athletes pull down in other top pro sports.

Taking the opposite view — see @WPBSoccer—some argued that MLS is just a distraction that’s actually hurting U.S. soccer development. Instead of wasting time on the local league, the best U.S. players should aspire to sign with top European teams where they’ll get the necessary challenge and experience to compete at the highest level, and pull the United States along with them.

It’s a great debate, so this week we’re offering a bonus prompt to tackle the question in depth:

Is MLS helping U.S. World Cup chances, or hurting them?
