Welcome to December!

The holiday season can be a stressful time for parents and families. At Home Sweet Home, we want you to feel supported to share your stories and connect with people who understand. You can do this by engaging with the work of other writers in the publication and by joining the Home Sweet Home Facebook Group.

Look after yourselves and don’t hesitate to reach out for support if this is a stressful period for you.

The Winner of November’s Writing Prompt

Last month, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we challenged you to write about a parenting or family experience that made you feel thankful.

The winner of the challenge is The Upending Consequence of Change by Mindy Morgan Avitia. Mindy has written a beautiful piece on finding things to be grateful for whilst struggling with becoming a new parent in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Well done, Mindy, and thank you for sharing your story with us.

December’s Writing Prompt

This month, you are challenged to pause and reflect during this busy festive period and write about the greatest gift you have received from your family. More information on this prompt, including rules and submission guidelines, can be found here.

Best of November

Each month, six stand-out stories are selected to appear on the “Best of” section of the homepage.

10 Lessons From My First Month Of Fatherhood by Matthew Confer

How to Play With Your Children Without Feeling Bored by Mary DeVries

Getting Kids to Listen to You Without Raising Your Voice by Brian Relay

What it’s Like When You Can’t Hold Your Baby by Meaghan Ward

One Bad Moment Does Not Make You a Horrible Parent by Vanessa Torre

How to Handle Becoming a Mom During a Pandemic by Meltem Barcelona

Author Spotlight

Every month, we devote this space in the newsletter to lift up another writer. This month, we encourage you to check out the work of Benny Lim.

Benny writes about his experiences of fatherhood openly and vulnerably, sharing his wisdom to enable other parents to learn the same life lessons. We are very lucky to have him as a writer for Home Sweet Home. Fathers usually find it harder to speak about their experiences, so thank you Benny for showing fathers can be just as vulnerable as mothers in sharing their parenting experiences.

Thank you for supporting Home Sweet Home and making it a safe place for writers to share their experiences of parenting and family.
