After hosting virtual Huddles in April and August earlier this year, it was time to call curtains on this yearā€™s developer-focused events with another virtual Huddle to celebrate our developer community and take a peek at the exciting stuff coming up in 2021. Among the uncertainties that 2020 brought along, one was Zoom fatigue. Mindful not to make our developers sit through two days of Zoom events at the end of a long year, we came up with a power-packed ā€˜Miniā€™ Huddle ā€” a one-day event, laser-focused on the most important developments.

A recap of what we covered during the huddle.

This edition highlighted advanced features like Custom Objects, Omni Apps, and two fantastic developer stories by Ilya Belyavskiy and Kishore Prabhakar.

The whole idea of connecting virtually limited our privileges and opportunities to have fun interactions with our developer community. So, we tried our best to elevate human connection at the event, kicking off with a fun icebreaker quiz to do away with any awkward silence and test our developersā€™ general knowledge of our community and the Freshworks Developer Platform it is built around.

Fun quiz time

After a little fun, we moved forward with our traditional recap of what we have been doing since the last catch-up. Satwik Hebbar ā€” Director of Engineering, Freshworks, took us through a brief journey back in time (at 01:57 in the video), reflecting on the evolution of the Freshworks Developer Platform, and where we find ourselves today. He also shared glimpses of the exciting events we have in store for 2021.

Some of the announcements made during the event:

All about Omni Apps and Custom Objects EAP

After Satwikā€™s insightful presentation, it was time for the developers to get a deep dive through our hands-on sessions. At 27:21, Rohith Jayaraman ā€” Software Engineer, Freshworks, showed us how to build an Omni app that can support multiple products. He also discussed the importance of Omni Apps and how to build an app only once and deploy it across multiple Freshworks products. Rohith demonstrated all this using Glitch, allowing our participants to code and debug in real-time.

After a short break, Hemchander S ā€” Senior Developer Advocate, Freshworks, presented a session on Custom Objects. He talked about how developers can leverage Custom Objects using a demo application (you can check out his session from 01:47:05 onwards. Caution: Hemā€™s session talks a lot about food, which certainly made us crave.šŸ˜‚)

Highlights from sessions

Learnings for the community, by the community: Minnal Talks.

Resisting our hunger pangs, we moved on to the next session, the Minnal (lightning in Tamil) talks kindly presented by our own community members. At 02:45:04, Ilya Belyavskiy, a developer at Swedbyte, shared the story about how they scaled their integration with Instagram during the recent Indian Premier Cricket League.

For the second community talk of the day, we had Kishore Prabhakar from Techaffinity. Kishore walked us through the story of how they managed to migrate their public WorkflowMax app to use a new API scheme without disrupting any of the active users of their app (at 03:03:50 in the video).

Important ResourcesšŸŒ“

Letā€™s catch up again next year.šŸ¤™šŸ»

We wrapped up the event with a closing note from Satwik and requested our participants for feedback so we could continue making these Huddles more valuable in 2021 and beyond.

2020 has not been a typical year by any stretch of the imagination, but we still have a lot to be grateful for. On behalf of the entire Freshworks family, thank you so much for being with us this year, despite all the challenges we have all been through together. We are looking forward to seeing you in many more Huddles.

Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so muchā€ ā€” Helen Keller.
