01 / Netflix’s failed social strategy, unboxing Chrome, and GV’s strategy to inexpensive research testing

Welcome to Issue 01!

Thank you for signing up for the Front Newsletter! Welcome to the first edition! We’re excited to begin sharing some of the best content on the internet about product, user experience design, and research. With so much content available, we’re bringing you a top list of what’s worth reading in the industry.

The industry is evolving and maturing at a rapid pace. Best-practices and new techniques seem to develop almost faster than we’re able to bring new products to market. As product managers, designers, and researchers, it’s critical that we’re continually learning and refining our craft.

Our goal is to help you focus on what’s most valuable out there today and keep you informed on upcoming Front training and conference events. To that effect, we have four sections in each edition: (1) a spotlight that will feature an article, individual, product, talk, or podcast; (2) three articles on career development or your role building better products; (3) upcoming workshops where you can practice process, design, or research methods; and finally, (4) updates to speaker announcements for the Front conference.

We hope you enjoy!

— Ben, Andrew, and Wade

*Please let us know of anything else you think would be valuable to share in the newsletter.

Workfront User Experience Operating Agreement

“The User Experience team at Workfront experienced a lot of growth and change in 2018. We doubled in size. We reorganized into cross-functionally-led portfolios — breaking down silos, providing strategic vision, and further strengthening the synergy between Product Management, Engineering, and UX. We assembled a dedicated team that lead the design and development of a new design system. We added two dedicated researchers. We ran two internship cohorts and hired three new associates.”

Unboxing Chrome

“In honor of Chrome’s 10th birthday in September 2018, we launched a complete redesign of our UI which involved an overhaul of our design process. And while Chrome has always been open source, I wanted to share more of our design stories in the hopes that others can learn from it.”

How to build a simple UX lab anywhere

“When I do UX research for startups, I try to make it easy for teams to observe from anywhere, while demonstrating they don’t need a fancy usability lab to do it themselves. Having conducted over 200 UX research studies for GV companies, I’ve come to rely on a simple setup that’s inexpensive, and flexible enough for testing mobile and desktop prototypes in-person and remotely.”
