02 / Radical Product Prioritization, Less Phone Usage, Inspiring Designers, Bike Sharing On-Boarding

Welcome to Issue 02!

We live in a world where technology is so ingrained in our lives. Where without it, we feel like something is missing. Life with it gives us access to people, communities and information that we would have only dreamed of having twenty years ago. We can access it through large screens, small screens and now many can just ask the internet anything even without a screen. It’s truly a blessing to live in this day and age.

With access to all this information it’s becoming easier than ever to create products. New ones are popping up everyday. So the general feeling is to move as fast as possible, prioritize what’s most important, and be the first to put it out into the world. As product creators we have a responsibility to take a moment and think about the impact that a product might have on the world. As cultural theorist Paul Virilio said, “When you invent the ship, you also invent the shipwreck.” This week let’s take a moment to think “should we build this” rather than “can we build this”.

A Radical, And Simple, Approach To Product Prioritization

“Execution without measurement is pointless. You need to know what prioritization lead to what outcome. You can only improve what you measure. Unfortunately most product teams are still measuring vanity metrics and outputs instead of outcomes tied to customer happiness and revenues.”

Are you addicted to your phone?

The Real Reason Apple and Google Want You to Use Your Phone Less

“Apple and Google are making it easier for consumers to cut back on phone use because it is in their interest to do so. In this case, what’s good for the user is also good for these companies’ bottom lines. Apple and Google don’t want you to get addicted. Addiction is a compulsive harmful behavior. Rather, they’d prefer you form healthy habits with your digital devices.”

Who inspires you in our industry?

Inspiring Designers [spreadsheet template]

“What do you want to do in 5 years? What about 15 years? This question is hard because technology, industries, and what’s possible changes so fast. As a thought exercise, I tracked the career history of ten designers who inspire me in 2015 to help me make my own plan. I figured out it was time to rejoin a product company, continue writing, and most importantly not to worry. Because this activity was so valuable for me, I made a spreadsheet template for you!”

Are your customers abandoning or delighted in your on-boarding experience?

What Can Bike Sharing Apps Teach Us About Mobile On-boarding Design?

“Given the proliferation of bike/scooter sharing services these days, I thought it would be interesting to compare the mobile app on-boarding experiences of the ones I could access. To do so, I went through the new customer flow for six of these services.”
