PROBING INTO THE MANAGEMENT OF MEDICAL EMERGENCIES IN GATED COMMUNITIES

Though the insights and observations from the research along with the feedback, we could map out data into more precise categories with the help of different UX research methods. This led us to look into two different scenarios (inside and outside the house) that can arise in a gated community. In the first scenario, which is a person falling sick inside his house, we have developed (One Touch Emergency Button) an extension to the existing MyGate platform. The second scenario deals with a person falling sick outside the house within the gated community. For this we have made a mock-up product (MyGate Emergency Button), which is integrated to the MyGate’s local server and sends emergency notification, that can be placed in common areas. Further more, we analysed how to train the in-mates for giving immediate ‘First-Aid’ in a medical emergency.

Problem Statement

Most often, in gated communities, the ‘Medical Emergencies’ are not efficiently managed. The residents and staff are either ignorant about the available facilities in their society or are confused on how to adequately handle a medical emergency.

Research

The data previously collected (Medium Article 1, Article 2) and feedback, were mapped out using some UX research methods.

UX Evaluation (RUACC):

UX Requirements (IAMAST) :

Outputs :

1) Outside the house scenario — BODY STORMING :

Screen —

All the Security guards and the Admin gets the notification from the common area device and the nearest security guard reaches the location for assistance.

Pop-Up notification from ‘MyGate Emergency Button’

CHART at Security Guard’s room and Admin office to know the button codes

2) Inside the house scenario — JOURNEY MAP :

Screens —

The user has a new ‘One Touch’ Emergency button for Medical Emergency, which he needs to slide to send alert notification. The ‘Pop-Up’ notifications are sent to Security guards, Admin, Family members(people using the application with the same block/house number) and immediate neighbours once the button is swiped.

User’s side screens

The Security guards and the Admin of the society gets ‘Pop-Up’ notification in their smartphones with an alarm and vibration. They get an option to go to the ‘Emergency contacts’ directly from the pop-up, from which they can call for Medical Aid immediately.

Security guard’s/Admin’s side screens

After the Security guard or the Admin calls for Medical Aid he has to drag down the ‘MyGate Help’ notification in the notification bar(which appears in the smartphone automatically when he takes an action on the Pop-Up notification) and send response notification to the user that he has called for medical assistance. He has to manually select either of the two options from the dragged down notification to remove the ‘MyGate Help’ notification from his device.

This is the same procedure Security guard or the Admin has to do when he gets a notification from ‘MyGate Emergency Buttons’ kept in common areas of the gated community(outside the house scenario).

Screens 1 and 2 are Security guard’s/Admin’s side and the last one is the User’s side screen

3) MyGate’s collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society

Outputs Summary :

Screens — For sending and receiving notifications in a Medical Emergency through the MyGate application which helps the user to get immediate medical assistance.

Mock-up Device — ‘MyGate Emergency Button’ which is a physical button, that can be installed in common areas of a gated community, which notifies the Security Guards and the Admin in an emergency.

First-Aid — As a suggestion, if MyGate can collaborate with ‘Indian Red Cross Society’, medical first-aid training can be given to the residents, security guards, admin and other staff periodically. This can help the patient get possible immediate aid before he gets professional medical assistance.

Outcomes :

If the above outputs are incorporated in the system, it can build trust within the users by providing them with help in Medical Emergency. A resident will feel more secured and aware of how to react to a medical condition. The security guard and the admin are assigned more responsibility in getting medical assistance when notified through the platform. The Admin also has to keep track of any updates in the ‘Emergency Contacts’ list.
