長期痛症會影響病人的活動能力、 心理狀況及社交關係。香港成年人口中，長期痛症的發病率大概是10.8%，當中大部分患者均表示自己的社交生活大減，情緒及睡眠亦受影響，以致無法正常工作。長期痛症不單影響本人，也影響到家人及照顧者。
