Kurt Newman, M.D. is the president and CEO of Children’s National Health System in Washington, D.C., consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best pediatric hospitals in the country. Dr. Newman has been a surgeon at Children’s National for more than thirty years and was for many years its surgeon in chief. A committed mentor, he is also a professor of surgery and pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Newman helped create the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, which is dedicated to making children’s surgery less invasive and more pain free. He also expanded the mandate of Children’s National to offer more pediatric services in under-served neighborhoods. A strong advocate for the expansion of mental health treatment for kids, he is actively involved in improving pediatric care nationally through his work on the boards of the Children’s Hospital Association and Safe Kids Worldwide. He and his wife, Alison, a neonatal nurse practitioner, are the parents of two college-age sons and live in Bethesda, Maryland.
