Happy New Year everyone! 2019 was a year of significant growth and changes for me. Here are several things I have learned over the course of this year:

1. Each friend in your life has a purpose. Some friends are for career development, some are for common interests, some are for guidance, and some are simply just for companionship and fun. You can’t expect one person to fit the mold for all of these types. Treasure and appreciate each friend for what they have to offer.

2. Make as many friends in your field as you can. You never know when you might be able to go to them for expertise, or vice-versa. There is strength in numbers.

3. Be patient and kind to yourself and others, no matter how difficult it may seem at the moment or during a particular situation. It really goes a long way. See my article, “Patience — A Lost Art, Waiting to be Found” for more on the art of patience.

4. Be willing to lend a helping hand, an ear, or a shoulder to someone who needs it, but do not be an emotional doormat. Know your boundaries and worth.

5. Have the courage to be open and vulnerable to your significant other. In fact, you should try to be more vulnerable to others in general (like Brene Brown, author of Daring Greatly suggests), although we know this is not an easy feat. (If you have a hard time opening up to them, then it may be a bad sign. Do some introspection and try to rectify the problem.)

6. You will know you found the one not only when you have an initial spark, or a loyal companion, but when you share that deep, intimate emotional connection that is hard to find within many human beings. That is the difference between a close friend and a heartfelt, romantic partner.

7. Relentlessly pursue the things you want and never give up, even when times are tough or uncertain. Don’t stop doing something just because you feel you aren’t getting the recognition or accolades you deserve. If you enjoy it, then go for it. Believe in yourself, and others will see you flourish.

8. Experiences are more valuable than material possessions. Make money, then go out and make memories and cherish them with the important people in your life. ❤

9. Possessions aside, if an experience does not spark joy for you, then do not pursue it next time. Don’t just accept it to fill a void in your life. Do the things you truly want to do, deep in your heart.

10. Don’t put others’ happiness above your own. Make sure you are happy and fulfilled too. See “Don’t Put Your Life On Hold” article for a more in-depth look at this.

I hope you found these tips useful, and let me know your thoughts in the comments.
