At Metta, we’re introducing our work — supporting startups, industry, and government with sustainable technology-driven innovation — but also the amazing team behind it all.

At Metta, we pay close attention to who we work with and the same goes for the Metta team. As such, we are making an ongoing effort to highlight the people behind Metta in our Meet the Team series 🎉

It’s been great to work with Fatema Basim, Researcher at Metta over the past few months. In the latest part of our Meet the Team series, we learn more about Fatema, and why she is excited about Metta.

Q1: Hi Fatema! 👋 How would you describe what you do at Metta? What are you currently working on?

I work with Metta as a researcher. My role mainly involves carrying out research and analysing data on the digital health ecosystem. I am currently focused on assisting with the launch of a digital health innovation hub in the UK.

Q2: How did you first get interested in the tech / startup ecosystem? And how did you come to join the team at Metta?

I come from a media background with a specialty in the Middle East region. My previous role involved building a real-time news tech product at a start-up. Witnessing the growth and expansion of this company really got me fascinated in the lifecycle of start-ups and the ways in which data is used to produce meaningful insights. I was fascinated by the work Metta was doing to help governments, organisations and startups to design and deliver meaningful and innovative strategies for a variety of industries.

Q3: Within this ecosystem, what is something people are not paying enough attention to?

From what I’ve learnt so far, the ecosystem of each country and even industry differs greatly. It’s the knowledge and understanding of each ecosystem that governments, investors, startups and other stakeholders need to focus on in order to make smarter decisions. That’s where Metta’s value comes along, especially as ecosystems evolve with time.

Q4: What’s been the best part of working at Metta?

Definitely the people! Everyone is incredibly nice and helpful and only a message/call away. From the get-go, I could tell the company has an inclusive culture, where every individual’s thoughts and ideas are valued.

Q5: What do you find most exciting about where Metta is going?

Metta has enormous potential to lead the way in sustainable innovation and growth in the start-up space, especially given its diverse expertise in various sectors. I’m excited to see big corporations, that have traditionally not thought about innovation and sustainability, to use Metta for their future projects.

Q6: Tell us more about your activities outside of work. Outside of work, what’s a project that you’ve enjoyed the most or are most proud of?

Most recently, I’ve been working on learning and creating recipes inspired by my Middle Eastern heritage. So when I’m not working, you’ll find me in the kitchen or at the supermarket or local market buying new ingredients.
