A note from the editors of Modern Music Analysis

Hello and welcome back to another edition of MMA’s Monthly Message! The month of June was huge for both the publication and the music scene in general as we have long-awaited releases from some of our favorite artists. Check out what the month of June had to offer below.

Officially Official

As mentioned in last month’s version of MMA’s Monthly Message, we have officially launched a Modern Music Analysis website. Becoming a member of the website allows you to interact with other members and blog contributors directly, along with exclusive access to groups and forums specific to the MMA community. Building a friendly community that discusses music is vital to the growth of MMA, so go check out the website and become a member!

In addition to building a community and audience, building a tangible brand is also important to the growth of Modern Music Analysis. Eventually, maybe before the end year, there will be a physical manifestation of MMA. We were thinking something along the lines of a magazine or merchandise. If you have any ideas or would be interested in a physical representation of MMA, leave a clap, highlight, note, or comment below.

As we progress in numbers for the publication, we will continue looking and accepting new writers for MMA. As a team, we will be scouring through Medium for the best and up-and-coming music writers. However, if you find us before we find you, go ahead and submit! You can find the submission guidelines in the submissions tab or here.

And finally, a bit of news in the composition of the publication. A new category has been added — Music News. This category will become a focal point of the publication as this is just important as the normal music analysis this publication provides. For example, Mark Chinapen’s piece about the newly released CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST by Tyler, The Creator drew thousands of eyes toward the publication with such a timely release. Bringing the public and internet the most recent music news along with the best music analysis will help MMA grow exponentially.

Reminders

Just a reminder, as we are still adding songs to the MMA Spotify playlist. We have about an hour of music total on the playlist. If you’re interested in adding some of your favorite — or even your own — music, check out the article here or the playlist here!

As mentioned in the last monthly message, the Halftime Highlights series is still in motion. Writers are welcome to list off their favourite albums of the year so far from now until December. For more info click here to get familiar with the guidelines. Posts for this series should be coming up shortly so stay tuned!

Stories of the Month

After skipping last month's stories of the month, it is important that we re-up for June, as there were a ton of solid choices to choose from. In this section, I choose some of my favorite articles that have been published in MMA over the past month or so. It may not necessarily be the “best” by composition, but rather pieces that I may have had a personal connection to. Each writer (including editors) in MMA is eligible for this title each month.

First, is Wepea Buntugu’s album review of Psychodrama by Dave. One of our newest writers provides one of the best analyses while also introducing some underrated music. Check it out here!

With “Cucumber Water”, Danny Friday gives a clear-eyed analysis of the quirky bass-heavy tune “Cucumber Water”. Further, he uncovers an important element of the song’s subtext. You can enjoy this article here

Nicole Brown’s review of The Civil Wars by Barton Hallow is an excellent example of being at the right place at the right time. After listening to a song by the group at a local bookstore, she decided to give the album a listen and her reaction to the full album is both emotional and endearing. You can read her full review here.

That’s all for this month! Thanks for tuning into Modern Music Analysis and be on the look out for the latest music news and analyses. As always, thank you for your support and keep on rockin!
