OPO.js meetup #5: Wrapping Up 👋

Long gone is the last meetup of 2017 of the Porto JavaScript Community, “butt” we haven’t been idle (pun intended).

I sh*t you not, Youtube picked my face for the cover, so I guess I got that going for me, which is nice 🤔

The turnout was great. As usual, well over 100 JavaScripters showed up. But the most surprising thing was the dinner, with a total of 55 people joining in! 🔥🔥🔥

Looks like the dinners are really picking up and people are taking the chance to exchange ideas and knowledge.

Clearly happy about releasing a fresh new module on NPM.

First ever After-After-Party at OPO.js meetup #5

The After-After-Party 🍻

This was a first. Like a cpu intensive sync cycle, hogging the event loop, the resistance refused to throw in the towel and go away, and instead kept on partying even after dinner, well into the night, well… well until the owner kicked us out. 🙃

This was a fun meetup, focused on community. You keep finding familiar faces, which means people are coming back for more — Marco Oliveira, OPO.network founder

The talks 🗣

On to the nitty-gritty part, the talks.

João Granado talked about “The Right Amount of Sugar”, in trying to find the right balance between power and order. In the words of Uncle Ben, “With great power comes great responsibility”. Or instead you could just take Granado’s words.

Is it me, or does Granado look disturbingly satisfied with his words? 😆

João Fonseca told us a story, “From Bitcoin to Smart Contracts”, how the crypto currencies evolved from Bitcoin, to altcoin forks, to Ethereum, a truly programmable currency with Solidity, which will be very familiar to JS developers, to BAT and the Brave browser. If you’re looking to discover the cryptocurrency history and basics for developers, this is a great way to dive in and get a wide view of the field! 👐
