The Goliath is an iconic BattleMech, among the first created for the BattleTech setting way back when. Like several of this first generation of BattleMechs, its design was taken from anime, more specifically the excelent Fang of the Sun Dougram. However, it would take several iterations in the years thereafter, recently going back to a shape closer to its origins. All in all, it remains a very well-known piece of the lore.

It was originally developed as a generalist assault ‘Mech with a perchant for fire-support. This was due to the Goliath being made using the lessons learnt from the prior Scorpion. Quadrupedal ‘Mechs are stable firing platforms and have interesting movement profiles so it was thought it was a worthwhile pursue. The heavier weight made for a even steadier fire platform and a smoother ride. The heavier weapons load and armor didn’t hurt either.

However, pilots weren’t keen on quadrupedal machines. Given that BattleMechs use the MechWarrior’s own sense of balance for piloting, the four legs made the experience feel odd and the skills necessary to control the machine harder to learn. Despite its qualities, the truth is that the Goliath was never produced in large numbers. Due to this, it wasn’t present in many engagements either.

During the Succession Wars its more well-known uses were the failed defense of St. Andre by the Capellan Confederation during the Fourth Succession War and as part of the Third Lyran Guards during their ill-fated intervention in the Ronin War.

However, after the Clan Invasion, the Goliath’s luck would change. Came the Word of Blake Jihad, the Blakist Militia would be equipped with large numbers of upgraded Goliaths to fill its need for assault ‘Mechs. These machines fought throughout the conflict, their pilots being adept at close-range fighting with heavy autocannons and heavy gauss rifles.

This was a fun and simple model to build. Uses 81 parts and comes in Blakist colors. This was a classic ‘Mech, and one that I had to get to sometime. Speaking of classics, for those who have asked me to make them, the Wolverine, the Marauder IIC and the Rifleman are already in the works, so expect more of these in the near future although I cannot say when exactly.

Until them, stay safe and keep an eye on this place!
