The Citizen Journalism Manual…
28. The time is now
We’ve seen how grassroots journalism by blogs has had an impact at various points politically, as ordinary people have amplified stories that were being ignored by the traditional press…Jimmy Wales
THE CHAPTERS in the Citizen Journalism Manual were written to provide a brief background and to outline the basic skills you will need to make a start as a citizen journalist.
You start by defining the topics you want to write about. It is practical to start with things you already know a lot about or that you practice. Look for others who write on the same topics and see how they approach their writing.
Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers.
…Isaac Asimov
Reading the work of others is useful, not only to see how they write but to gain different points of view on your topic. We discover new information by doing this. The work of other writers can show us that we are on the right path in our thinking or that we need to change what we believe.
Don’t forget to check your facts using reputable sources and to use as up-to-date information as possible because numbers and other information can change with time.
As you progress you will find your voice — your characteristic way of writing and the other practices you will develop. Comment on other’s blogs and social media and use social media to direct people to your blog. Remember that reputation will influence the type of people who read what you write, and reputation is formed by your approach to your work as a citizen journalist.
The Citizen Journalism section on PacificEdge carries stories relevant to the practice of citizen journalism and to journalism in general. Leave comments below the stories if you have some observation about them.
So, it is time to set out on your journey into citizen journalism, the media by the people for the people where we share our thoughts and ideas, our knowledge and solutions.
What we need is an anti-bullshit movement. It would be made up of people from all walks of life who are dedicated to rooting out empty language. It would question management twaddle in government, in popular culture, in the private sector, in education and in our private lives.
