Biweekly update on Cosmos ecosystem vol. 41, 27th January — 10th February

Welcome all Space Cowboys and Astronaut Girls to our traditional biweekly report on Cosmos! Get ready to catch up with all the news and events that were up in the ecosystem over the past two weeks!
First and foremost, the development team has been hard at work in making sure the Stargate Upgrade is a success. To include an improved user experience and more, the Stargate Upgrade for the Cosmos Hub was postponed until February 18th. So at the earliest, all systems go for IBC would be early March. IBC here we come!
With seven years in the making and securing major blockchains ecosystems, how does Tendermint Core’s 1.0 roadmap look like and what should the users expect? Check out the blog post in their official blog (it’s all about interface and block protocol stability, as well as performance, security and usability improvements). What’s more, Starport v0.14, the easiest way to build Cosmos blockchains, comes with a brand new release focused on improving its core features: scaffolding, configuring, and running blockchains in a development environment.
As for the Cosmos ecosystem updates: The tenth edition of the Interchain Foundation’s biweekly update is here. Regen Network’s Core Team led the SDK architecture for the migration to Protobuf and stewarded the non-IBC parts of the Stargate release. Moreover, Regen named one of 15 global carbon suppliers to help Microsoft pursue climate moonshot. The new integrated Oracle and Mastercard solution automates the process of helping those in need — from determining program eligibility to the accurate and timely distribution of funds, in turn removing inefficiencies, reducing operational costs, and enhancing fraud prevention. The first front-running resistant, cross-chain AMM is now live on the Secret testnet. IRISnet Mainnet 1.0 Upgrade is about to happen on February 25th. Bluzelle Mainnet goes live. Matic Network is expanding tech scope and mission and becoming Polygon. The Injective team introduced Equinox Staking, which will serve as the final phase of their testnet. After a successful run in testnet, Kadenaswap is headed to mainnet in the upcoming days to start “Bountyswap”. The first testnet of the Althea blockchain and the Gravity Bridge will happen on February 13th. Band Protocol 2021 roadmap is out. BSC (Binance Smart Chain) flipped Ethereum on daily transactions. e-Money has joined forces with Ramp Defi to provide greater interconnectivity and accessibility in the crypto space. Cosmos (ATOM) staking is now live on DeFi Earn. Sentinel’s first public iOS dVPN release is ready for its App Store launch, opening up the Sentinel ecosystem to millions of more potential users. Starname roadmap was pudlished. Terra’s ‘January 2021 Community Update’ is out. And more!
For more news and details, please, check the report below! See you in two weeks!
That’s all for today! Stay in the loop!

Development

Github metrics:

Right now, blockchains communicate via tacked-on solutions (state channels, sidechains, swaps, bridges and so on). With the Stargate update to Cosmos on February 18th, the tools for native blockchain interoperability will be live on mainnet.

Iqlusion’s Zaki Manian, who leads much of the development for Cosmos, explained that once Stargate goes live, a governance vote will be required to switch on inter-blockchain communication (IBC), which will take two weeks to finalize.

So at the earliest, all systems go for IBC would be early March. That said, Tendermint chains need to upgrade to the Cosmos SDK for this to happen. Manian said this is probably one or two weeks of work for most dev teams and they don’t need to wait for Stargate to kick in to start.

Starport v0.14: state persistence and improved support for proto files

For the first release of 2021, the team has decided to focus on improving the core features of Starport: scaffolding, configuring, and running blockchains in a development environment. Starport now offers even more streamlined Stargate support with commonly used protocol buffer files bundled with the CLI, a simpler scaffold, and automatic code generation. Configuration now supports setting a custom binary name, the path to the home directory, and enabling a built-in faucet. Finally, the blockchain state now persists between restarts.

Towards Tendermint Core 1.0

Tendermint roadmap for the next 18 months

Tendermint Core 1.0’s chief concern is stability. It must be stable enough that people can (continue) to build production software on it confidently. This requires an increased level of clarity and rigidity around all the interfaces exposed by Tendermint Core. It also requires us to build confidence in Tendermint Core’s performance and correctness through investments in performance-oriented refactors and increased, more sophisticated testing.

This post outlines the things the team considers necessary for a 1.0 release.

The team thinks of new features and improvements as a kind of Maslow’s hierarchy combined with a food pyramid, with the most substantial and most boring goals at the bottom, and the shinier and smaller changes at the top.

#37 Stargate Upgrade- Second time is a charm! in the voting period

Proposal to complete the Stargate upgrade, halt `cosmoshub-3` at 06:00 UTC on Feb 18th, export the state and start `cosmoshub-4` based on gaia 4.0.

#36 Delay of Hub Stargate Upgrade for approximately 2 weeks passed

The Stargate team was recommending that the Cosmos Hub reschedule the next upgrade to a new commit hash.
