IPFS ecosystem biweekly vol.4, 3rd March — 18th March

Why IPFS?

IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is a peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol designed to make the web faster, safer, and more open. It utilizes DHT (distributed hash table) and Merkle DAG (directed acyclic graph) data structures. IPFS uses a protocol similar to BitTorrent to decide how to move data around the network. One of the advanced features of IPFS is that it supports file versioning. To achieve file versioning, it uses data structures similar to Git.

IPFS forms the Content Centric Internet where you access data directly from any server in the world, and works in closed environments disconnected from the Internet. Interplanetary Linked Data makes it possible to access data from any public Merkle-tree like Ethereum.

Here’s how IPFS works

Textile

  • Introducing the Filecoin Miner Index and Calculator: The team shares the latest update to the Textile Miner Index and discovery tools. Among Filecoin network clients, they often heard that identifying miners on the network was too tricky. The release of the Miner Index should dramatically reduce the time it takes clients to find good miners for their data. They are releasing the index as an open-source tool available in their CLI and as an open REST API endpoint. Unlike existing network monitoring tools for Filecoin, the Miner Index pulls together real-time deal-making data from on-chain and off to get a sense of which miners are taking online deals from the network. The index API allows clients to find miners by price, observe successful deals, speed from their North American nodes, and more. The project is part of the continued work to make the network a powerful data storage engine for any project worldwide. Check out the full presentation.
