This blog is about blockchain, digital markets and cryptonomics in an uncertain world — my personal thoughts with a slight focus on insurtech and fintech. Nowadays these marketplaces are characterized by radical uncertainty in an environment of innovation, rapid change, high volatility and many stories of success and failure. The term “radical uncertainty” goes back to Mervyn King. I share King’s opinion that in practice we find much less “risk” than expected — and much more “uncertainty” than we had hoped for (King differentiates very precisely between the terms “risk” (statistically measurable) and “uncertainty” (not statistically measurable)). This thinking applies in particular to global digital markets where traditional planning and risk models no longer work. Thus digital insurers and digital financial markets have to learn from the experiences of e-commerce in the recent years: Fast actions, adoptive learning, simple heuristics and an open mind are more important than traditional planning (waterfall or pure statistical thinking).
