Hello, folks. We are still alive!
Week 1 — Not the problem I expected.
I had plenty of concerns for the first week: old injuries flairing up, hips/knees/ankles giving out, plain endurance. That has all been a challenge, but what nearly took me out was a surprise — not eating enough.
Our first endeavor will be hiking the Appalachian Trail!
Rather than starting from Georgia and going north to Maine, we are going to be doing a Flip Flop. This means that we are going to start in the middle — Virginia — since we are already here. We’ll head…
I am so glad to be back.
As mentioned in the latest video, I got a bit of an injury near the beginning of our hike. I didn’t fall down or twist my ankle, just used my feet too hard, too early. They say 'first ten under ten’. That is, your first ten days should be under ten miles. Well, we got caught up in the excitement and…
PA Part I: Nice Shelters and the Rock Maze
The beginning of Pennsylvania on the Appalachian trail is beautiful. The trail is not too rocky yet and has stretches of idyllic forests and streams. The shelters are also gorgeous and very well maintained.
Ep1: The Warm Up — 45 Miles

I went into detail with my co-workers prior to leaving and the most common response was “You’re not bringing deodorant?!” Nope. We’ll be embracing the trail life and I secretly hope it’s one less scented item that will prevent…
The Good, The Bad, and the Truly Miserable aka Episode 5
As I was editing episode 5 I thought to myself, “Why would anyone want to see us at our most miserable?” Then I remembered that the point of creating these videos and updates is to share our experience with family, friends, and anyone else interested in what hiking the…
As someone who habitually avoids learning new technology, the thought of making a movie using iMovie was daunting. I avoided it for days. I have no experience with iMovie, photography, film, YouTube, or pretty much anything that falls into that category.
Thus it begins.
We finished our final practice hike yesterday. Last call before we hit the trail for real. We used our full pack weight (roughly 40lbs for me), and did what amounts to a slightly below average day during the real thing: 7 miles and 400 feet of elevation change.
