Hello!

Hope the new year is off to a great start 😃. We at Self-ish are working hard to make it as special as can be here.

A few months ago, November 10th 2018 to be exact, we launched a new format and if you’ve been around you’ll notice a lot of things have changed. As Kamga Tchassa said, ‘Not worst or better, just different’ and that’s what we hope to achieve: a perfect blend of the old and new.

If you’ve been away, you can pick up the slack by reading ‘Self-ish is back’ and The New Self-ish.

We are building a community of young voices, and we need you.

Old and New

Self-ish started as a group of friends sharing personal essays on personal development and creativity. It was writing with purpose, with lessons and always moving. We want to honour that.

So what’s the new Self-sh about??

We want ‘Black Stories’ i.e. honest, unique and true to who we are.

Fiction, Non-fiction (Creative non-fiction, essays) and poetry are accepted. We want pieces with a lesson, stories with a message. Writing that moves.

We want to build a team of writers who critique and support each other’s work.
Here are our subjects of interest:

1.Creativity
2. Personal Development
3. Relationships
4. Money
5. Mental Health
6. Advocacy
7. Education

Who can be a writer for Self-ish?

We are looking for young African voices on the continent or in the diaspora who want to tell their own stories.

This last point is very important and our aim is not to be elitist, but to give stories that would otherwise be unheard in this space. Hence, we only accept writers of African origin.

So, have a story to tell?

Check out our submission guidelines.

Can’t wait to read from you!
