Chapter Two — Ascension
“3D manufacturing systems and their hangar are secure.”
The message hissed over an intercom, interrupting them. A technician nearby ticked a box.
“Power and main engineering are ready.”
Another anonymous voice broke the silence, others followed, confirming their area in the enclave was prepared for ascension.
Alex had the jitters and made it obvious.
“We must get back to operations soon.”
Ascension was billed as a simple decision, no risk event and mostly, to my knowledge, life was supposed to continue as normal. Judging by the tension in the room, the outcome was anything but assured.
Her husband took her to one side, but I could hear well enough.
“You go… I want to see what the enclave looks like below when we get clear.”
There was little warmth between them, cordiality, yes but
I got the impression he considered his wife capable but it seemed he wanted her out of the way. Perhaps the friction of today’s events had affected both of them.
