Never be afraid to dream BIG!

Don’t give up on your dreams!

Always follow your dreams!

How many times have you heard these words, let alone said these words?

A parallel universe

Some people are brave enough to shout their dreams out loud. A few of them even put it on their Instagram’s profile. Others bury them deep inside.

Regardless, we all dream big. Why? We are simply wired to do that. Unlike other species, humans have the incredible ability to imagine.
To simply envision something that doesn’t exist. We can think of a parallel universe in which our lives are completely different. Combining this unique ability with our desire for a change is exactly why we are all designed to dream big.

When we say “don’t be afraid to dream big,” what we really mean is that we shouldn’t hold back from envisioning a parallel universe in which our lives are better. We should always imagine the life that we want for ourselves.

There’s no doubt that we could live a more fulfilling life.
The proof is here on Medium. There are thousands of wonderful people who have turned their life around. And these people inspire and empower others to follow their own dreams.
There is something admirable in encouraging people to dream big.
But it’s also plain wrong.

Wrong? Why?

How To Accomplish All of Your Dreams’ on my Youtube channel — Sign of Life

The word ‘dream’ is associated with an unrealistic concept.
Have you ever dreamed of flying? You sink in that amazing bird-like feeling and watch the world from up above.
But eventually, you wake up and realize it was just a dream and unfortunately you can’t fly.

Dreams are unattainable.
You see, dreams can come true (on rare occasions) but unlike goals, they can’t be attained.
Whether you dream about traveling the world or having your own startup company — you know, at least on some level, that it’s just a fantasy.

“I’ve always dreamed of becoming a basketball player,” one might say, “But I guess it just wasn’t to be.”
When you deny responsibility you can never fail. That’s why dreams are terrific excuses. If your dream doesn’t come true then you’re not accountable because it wasn’t up to you in the first place.

A shooting star, a birthday wish, a wishing well or a dandelion — we are always looking for signs and opportunities to make a wish.
Wishes and dreams depend on a magical force to make them come true.
Even if there are stories of dreams that did come true, those are sporadic. And they send out the false message — that just by dreaming you’re doing enough.
But life isn’t a Hollywood movie nor a Disney fairytale. Miracles won’t happen just because you made a wish.

The lack of action, the lack of responsibility, and the acceptance that your desired reality isn’t likely to become true — those are the reasons why you can’t accomplish your dreams.
That’s why the saying ‘follow your dreams’ is nothing but a platitude.

Here’s how you can accomplish your dreams

Your aspirations are not dreams.
All the things you want to become, achieve, or have are not dreams.
If you want to accomplish something— stop referring to it as a dream.
Be courageous.
Instead of saying “don’t be afraid to dream big” say “don’t be afraid to aim big!
It might seem insignificant, but your mindset depends on it.
Give it a try. It’s liberating!

Like most things in life, it starts with self-awareness.
Take the time to think of the things you want to accomplish and the life you want to live. Instead of relying on some magical power that might (and might not) make your dream come true— start taking actions yourself.
You must understand that everything you wish for is attainable, but only if you take action.

Make a list of actionable steps you can take in order to achieve your goals.
As hard as it might be, if you really want to make your parallel universe a reality, then it’s up to you to make it happen.
Anything is viable if you are determined enough to accomplish something. It’s all starts with having the right mindset.

Creativity is born with desperation and with the unstoppable desire for a change.
If you want to start a business, travel the world or simply become a better version of yourself, you need an open mind. You must obtain all the right resources to make it happen.

Time to wake up

As a 15-year-old singer-songwriter, I was big on dreaming big. In my parallel universe, I was a big rock star who played live shows and recorded albums.
But my reality was one rejection after another.

Being underage, I wasn’t allowed in pubs and bars so I couldn’t play live gigs.
I also didn’t have enough money for a professional recording studio.
For a year or so, I kept dreaming. I was waiting for someone to notice me and give me a chance. Needless to say, that never happened.

It was time to wake up.
As soon as I realized it, things started to change. I found creative ways to make enough money to record. I also set up my own show from scratch. From building my own stage to hiring sound equipment to promoting it all over town. Eventually, a few hundred people turned up to see me play.

The moment you understand that it’s up to you to make things happen for you is empowering.
Eventually, I stopped asking “why would this radio station play a teenager’s music?” Instead, I started sending out my music. Sure, I got lots of rejections.
I even remember one of the most popular stations replying to my email and saying “you’ve got some balls, I’ll give you that!”
But at the age of 16, I surprised many people when I was invited time and time again to play live sessions on the radio and on TV.

You see, instead of thinking and focusing on why you can’t do something, you have to focus on why you can, why you want, and why you should.
Instead of fearing your current boundaries, you must focus on achieving the right tools to break down those walls.

If you can envision yourself living a better life — then you should never accept the possibility of it not happening.

One final note

If you are one of those who managed to make their desired reality come true then you have an obligation to help others.
But you must do it in a meaningful way.
Don’t tell people to follow their dreams. It’s just a cliche. It’s just another motivational quote.
Ask them to follow their passions and find a meaning. Tell them that their dreams aren’t actually dreams and it is in their power to accomplish everything they want to. In fact, it is their responsibility.

Don’t let them hide their failures with unfulfilled dreams.
Encourage them to discover their true value and to determine who they are.
Inspire them with your story and show them how they can attain their parallel universe by taking actions.

Tell them that there are two types of people:
Those who dream of becoming a beautiful unicorn, and those that, much like the rhino above, are taking action to make it happen.

Which one are you?

Tell me — what are your biggest dreams?
