As a content creator, I use AI writing tools to streamline my writing process.

But sometimes AI writing can produce content that feels mechanical and lacks a human touch. That’s why I’ve been experimenting with some subtle ways to trick AI to sound more human.

Here are five methods I’ve found to work well.

Human Feeding

One way I train AI to write more like a human is by feeding it with high-quality, human-written content.

This helps the AI to understand the nuances of human language, tone, and style. For example, when I’m training an AI writing tool to create marketing copy, I’ll often feed it with a successful blog post.

Either one of my own or from another blogger.

The idea isn’t to copy the words but teach the AI to emulate a more human writing POV.

If I wanted to, I could even feed the AI some good ole’ Stephen King writing. But I’m too afraid of what it might create.

Imaginative Generation

Another method I use is to ask the AI writer to pretend to be a human writer.

By setting up an imaginative scenario, I can encourage the AI to create content that feels more authentic. I’ll ask the AI writer to imagine they are a travel blogger describing a destination they have visited, rather than just generating a generic description of the location.

Or, I’ll ask the AI to take on the role of an expert with first-hand experience on the topic.

After prompting ChatGPT, I might get something like this:

I had my trusty ol’ rod and reel with me, and I was using his shiny new lure that I’d just picked up from the tackle shop. I cast my line out into the water and started reeling it in nice and slow, just like my granddaddy taught me.

I could feel something tugging on my line, and I knew right away that I had a big one on the hook. I started reeling in faster, trying to tire the fish out and bring it in closer to the boat.

But this fish wasn’t going down without a fight. It was thrashin’ around like crazy, trying to break free from the hook. I could feel my arms straining as I tried to reel it in, but I wasn’t gonna let this one get away.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, I managed to bring the fish in close enough to the boat so I could see it. And let me tell ya, it was a whopper! A big ol’ bass, at least 10 pounds if it was an ounce.

Is this perfect? Nope.

But it’s better than a third-person dry account. A little more fiddling with the prompts and you might have something to post.

Mirror Prompting

If I want the AI writer to produce content in a specific style, I’ll ask it to mirror the style of a human writer I admire.

Speaking of Mr. King, I might ask the AI writer to produce a blog post in the style of Stephen King.

If all goes well, the resulting content will be more suspenseful.

Maybe even a little creepy (one can hope).

It’s as simple as saying:

  • In the style of [Author Name]
  • Write this in the voice of [Author Name]
  • Make the writing sound like [Author Name]

When I asked Jasper to describe a zombie in the voice of Stephen King, this is what I got:

The zombie lumbered across the graveyard, moonlight illuminating its gray, rotting skin. The creature dragged its left leg, leaving a trail of mud in its wake. It wheezed with each step, the foggy night air filling its lungs with deathly silence. Crows perched in nearby trees flared their wings, as if sensing a presence among them. The zombie kept on, propelled only by instinct and the hunger for human flesh.

Again, this isn’t going to win any literary prizes.

But, most of the time, you only need to be good enough in terms of writing quality.

Emotional Damage

I’ve found that asking the AI writer to adopt a raw and emotional style can make the content feel more human.

If I’m writing about a difficult topic like mental health, I’ll ask the AI writer to use more emotive language and to write in a more vulnerable style.

This helps to create content that feels more personal and relatable.

Here’s a prompt to get an AI chatbot to write in a more human and emotional style:

Imagine that you’re a person who has just experienced a major life change.

Maybe you’ve just had a baby, lost a loved one, or started a new job. I want you to write about how you’re feeling in this moment. Be as descriptive as possible, and don’t be afraid to show your emotions.

Remember, your goal is to connect with your reader on a human level, so try to write in a way that feels genuine and relatable.

How are you feeling? What thoughts are running through your head? What does this experience mean to you?

Playful Tweaking

To add a touch of humor or playfulness to your AI-generated blog posts, you can make subtle tweaks to the content.

For instance, you could use wordplay or puns, or add in an unexpected twist or surprise ending. This can help to make the content feel more engaging and memorable for readers.

I also like to say, “Use broken English, colloquialisms, parentheticals, asides, and casual language.”

One More Thing

By using these subtle tricks, I’ve been able to make AI-generated content feel more authentic and engaging.

Content that ranks on Google.

Whether you’re using AI writing tools for marketing copy, social media, or blog posts, these methods can help you create content that truly resonates with your audience.
