In this post, I’m going to show you how to make $5,000 a month by writing short articles.

This is a method that’s worked for me, and I’m confident it can work for you too. I apply it to my portfolio of websites and on content published on other online writing platforms.

Here’s what I do.

1) Write About One Simple Idea

When you’re writing an article, make sure to focus on just one key idea.

Don’t try to cram too many ideas into one post - that will just make it confusing for your readers.

Instead, pick one central idea and make that the focus of your piece.

For example, if you’re writing about gardening, choose one specific aspect of gardening (e.g. planting tomatoes) and write about that.

Better yet, write a short article about a single strategy for planting tomatoes.

By laser-focusing your article in this way, you’ll keep your readers engaged and prevent them from getting lost or confused.

It will also keep your article short.

2) Establish a Zero Tolerance Policy for Fluff

When you’re writing, it’s important to be as concise as possible.

Every sentence should contribute toward your central idea, and every paragraph should move the reader closer to understanding that idea.

If you find yourself adding in irrelevant details or "fluffy" language, cut it out immediately.

This may seem like a tough rule to follow, but trust us - your readers will thank you for it.

They don’t want to wade through pages of useless filler - they want clear, concise information that gets straight to the point.

However, that doesn’t mean bare-bones blog posts.

You can (and should) include examples, stories, and templates that elucidate the example.

3) Go After No-Competition Keywords

One of the best ways to drive traffic to your short articles is by ranking for high-traffic keywords with low competition.

And traffic = 💸.

These are the kinds of keywords that are easy to rank for because not many people are targeting them - but they can still get a lot of searches every month.

To find these keywords, use a tool like Google AdWords Keyword Planner, Google Autosuggest, Ahrefs, or RankIQ (not an affiliate link).

Simply enter in some relevant seed keywords and filter for low competition.

Then, target these keywords in your articles and include them in your titles and naturally throughout the body of your text.

If you do this correctly, you’ll start seeing a steady stream of traffic trickling in from these no-competition keywords.

4) Write Very Directly

Some bloggers think that they need to add a lot of stylistic flourishes and frills to their writing in order to make it more engaging.

But the truth is, the best way to engage your reader is by writing very directly - using simple language that gets straight to the point.

Remember, your readers are busy people who appreciate the economy of language.

So don’t worry about sounding too "simple.”

Just focus on getting your message across as clearly as possible.

5) Say It Short and Fast

Time is a precious commodity these days so say what needs saying as quickly as possible then move on to something else.

Beating around the bush takes up valuable reading time.

Get straight down business, state what needs stating then sign off.

Use short words, short sentences, and lots of white space in your articles. Your readers will be eternally grateful.

How Short Articles Can Make You Money

Here is how short articles can actually make you money:

  • Short articles can drive big traffic to your blog posts
  • Short articles can be monetized with display ads
  • Short articles can be monetized with affiliate marketing links

Because the articles are short, they take less time to research, write, and edit. You can produce more of them around similar topics to build topical authority.

You can write and make money from these articles on:

  • Your own website
  • Online platforms that you can monetize
  • Other creators that pay you

I do all three.

Long-term, I think building out your own websites with hundreds or thousands of short articles is a good move.

As you publish articles, you can add display ads, affiliate links, and sell your own products, courses, or services.

But writing short articles on platforms like LinkedIn can make money faster.

That’s because they provide you with a pre-existing audience.

Final Thoughts

If you follow these simple tips, you can make $5,000 writing short articles each month.

A short article, by the way, can be 100 words to 1,000 words. Many of these short articles rank very high on Google for certain keywords.

Now, it’s still going to take time for your articles to rank.

So, write as many of these short articles as possible to stack your content. The traffic and earnings will compound over time.
