Prosthetics inspired by video games

Open Bionics has partnered up with Square Enix, the company behind the virtual world in the game Deus Ex. Together they are creating bionic arms inspired by characters in the video game. The technology will be open-source, available to the public for 3D-printing. Making prosthetics even cheaper!

Bio-artificial kidney

Researchers at the University of California have created a small device that reproduces many of the natural functions of kidneys. Surgically implanted, this device provides people suffering from kidney failure with a third treatment option, next to dialysis and kidney transplants (shortage of donors).

Soft wearable hand-robot

Researchers at the Seoul National University have created the Exo-Glove Poly. It’s a flexible, wearable glove, that assists people with a hand paralysis to grasp objects and help in opening bottles for example.

A second skin

MIT researchers have worked on a new type of material that has the property to tighten and protect skin. When applied, it becomes a thin, imperceptible coating which mimics the characteristics of healthy skin. It might be used for a variety of applications, such as protecting dry skin or delivering drugs against skin diseases.

Bartenders can poor you a beer, lend you an ear and apparently, they’re part-time inventors as well. Keahi Seymour has devised these bionic boots that can make you run up to 40km/h!
