Earlier this week I came across a video of the Jia Jia robot, a very interesting piece of work which inspired me to focus on humanoids this newsletter. Humanoid — a being having human characteristics or form.
They have been a popular subject in Sci-Fi movies for a long time (my favorite being I, Robot (2013) with Will Smith). I also want to take the opportunity to thank our intern Mira for her work these past months. She’s going to focus on her PhD, which means that we have an opening for a new intern!

Jia Jia robot

Claimed to be China’s first humanoid robot, this cheeky Jia Jia can make simple facial movements and is designed for the hospitality industry. Imagine being greeted by her in a restaurant or hotel.

Kuri, the home robot

It was difficult to choose which humanoid to feature as both the NAO and Kuri robot are quite cool. Still, Kuri wins, because it’s so cute. It even has its own human-like expressions called ‘romoji’s’. Watch the whole video to hear about the diverse possibilities for your home robot. Available at the end of 2017!

Trailer: Ex Machina (2014)

“The challenge is to show you she’s a robot and then see if you still feel she has consciousness.”
The Ex Machina movie is not a typical Sci-Fi movie, rather than focusing on action this film zooms in on philosophical questions about the nature of AI. The trailer will give you a good sense of where this movie is heading.
