Why Are So Many Americans Living in Their Cars?

The number of people living in their vehicles continues to skyrocket in the U.S.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I didn’t know anyone who lived in their car, but now I seem to know of A LOT of people who are doing it. Many have chosen to blog and vlog about their experiences living in their vehicles as well.

One of our fellow editors at Globetrotters, The Sturg, lives in a storage truck he and his partner converted into a tiny home: “Introduction to My Tiny Home Living”. Another writer here on Medium, Michelle Y. Kwak, has converted her Honda Civic into a tiny home: “I’m Rewriting My Life Inside A Honda Civic Sedan”.

Living on a Shoestring

Once upon a time, the U.S. was a place where a person could work hard and achieve their dreams — the “American Dream”. Those days are long gone. Succeeding in America is becoming exceedingly difficult.

Poverty is the number one reason people live in their cars. Not having enough money to pay for the expenses of life has become the norm in America these days.

Contrary to popular belief though, not all people who live in their vehicles are unemployed. Many simply work…
