Australian Conservatives

Cory Bernardi is Australia’s biggest dickhead. I don’t think many people would disagree with me. And given that this is his party he formed when he split from the Liberal Party, it’s built upon his own trash values.

But that isn’t enough to be labelled a dumpsterfire. Absorbing Family First, who were responsible for things like this, pushes them closer:

I have never wanted to punch someone in the face more than this dickhead.

But the real nail in the coffin is their lead senate candidate for Queensland.

I stand corrected.

Lyle Shelton, former head of the Australian Christian Lobby, leader of the No campaign in the same-sex marriage plebiscite, and the person who claimed that marriage equality would lead to another Stolen Generation. Also, the arsehole who pushed old Cory down to Australia’s second biggest dickhead.

And all of that’s enough for this party to get the dumpsterfire label they deserve.

Policy

I’m not going to lie: this party’s policy is much lighter on detail than what I expected for how opinionated Bernardi is. There’s the expected ranting about Australia’s Judeo-Christian heritage and values. They want to merge the SBS and ABC, which multiple government reviews have proven would not be more efficient or lead to better outcomes. And they want the market to decide whether or not to pursue renewables (but preferably not), even though the market would almost definitely go with renewables given that wind and solar are cheaper than coal energy production, and rapidly approaching gas.

But, credit where credit is due, I did appreciate some of their policy around more accountability for politicians, but it’s definitely not enough to cancel out all of the other shit.
