Gostwind was the first Korean folk metal outfit I managed to come across, is currently one of two, the other being Jambinai. There are probably more out there, and maybe I’ll dig some more when time permits. Gostwind’s sound is more leaning towards classic heavy metal, lacking the qualities of extreme metal sub-genres such as distorted vocals, blast beats, and heavily down-tuned guitars.

Their music’s level of aggressiveness nonetheless perfectly gives way to the unique cutting tones of the daegeum (flute) and haegeum (traditional fiddle), as well as traditional-style vocals. These folk elements are permanently embedded in the band’s signature sound through their respective mainstay musicians/performers, thereby making the band a significant representative of Korean folk metal.
