INTRODUCTION

The Northeasterner
The World Metal List
3 min readJan 1, 2022

This publication is the authors’ ongoing personal list and description of metal acts around the world that fuse ethnic instruments, vocal styles, and scales with their music.

This started out as a Spotify playlist, but yeah, the author decided to make commentaries about the bands/artists included there, coz he doesn’t have anything better to do.

For the sake of clarification, the term “world metal”, the namesake of this publication, was used by the author to refer to an overarching variety of metal music that includes the folk or world music elements that were mentioned above — instruments, chants, etc. It encompasses known metal sub-genres such as folk metal, Celtic metal, Medieval metal, Viking metal, Oriental metal, Vedic metal, and other related styles. The list is not limited to these though; a number of metal acts that are generally outside these genres, but were nonetheless able to incorporate world music elements to one or two of their albums or songs, will also be featured here.
