Check Out the Collina Strada Show at 306 Bowery
Get inspired to make some eco-friendly changes
Tie-dye is back, baby. And the Collina Strada show proved it to anyone who still may doubt the staying power of the retro pattern. It’s not just the print that’s making a comeback, but the ethos of the social justice movement that popularized it.
Held in our new, and unfinished, 306 Bowery headquarters, the Collina Strada show provided a thoughtful moment in the midst of a busy week. The brand, helmed by Hillary Taymour, used their show on Thursday to shift focus to a problem that’s plagued the fashion industry — and moreover, all industries — for years: the environmental impact. The show, titled Low Carbon Diet, tackled the topic head-on.
As pointed out by environmental activist and hip-hop artist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez who spoke throughout show, the little things that we change in our lives can have a big impact. From ditching single use plastics to skipping out on Seamless, what we do matters. And Collina Strada has vowed to make changes too. Taymour chose to use 75% dead stock fabric in the collection, switch the brand to biodegradable or recycled packaging, and has vowed to make other small but meaningful changes.
While modeling the expansive collection, featuring everything you’d need from a mesh trenchcoat to a daisy patterned baby jumpsuit, the diverse cast showed off some easy techniques to cut down on your environmental impact. They sipped from reusable water bottles and ate from reusable Tupperware containers during their walk down the chalk art decorated runway.
Plus, there was a very cute baby.
We’ve been making some changes too. Here at New Stand we’re also working to be a bit more green. We’ve changed all of our single use cups, straws and lids to bioplastic, compostable materials.
